Why Compost? 6 Benefits to Starting a Compost Pile

6 Benefits to Starting a Compost Pile

There are plenty of tips out there to help make your garden the best it can be. One of the best, and easiest to follow, is composting. Composting can seem intimidating at first, but once you do your research and get the hang of it, you’ll likely find that it’s very easy and convenient.

Composting is something you can do easily in your own home, and you may find that you actually enjoy the process. While it is definitely a trendy thing to start doing, composting has a lot of benefits that go far beyond keeping up with the masses.

1. Great For Your Garden

One of the most obvious benefits of composting is how much it helps your garden. Composting organic materials helps to enrich the soil, giving your plants more nutrients to grow well. If you have struggled to grow certain plants or vegetables in the past, you may find that by adding compost to the soil you are able to grow a successful crop. A little extra effort may mean the difference between a struggling tomato plant and a flourishing one.

2. Reduces the Need for Chemical Fertilizers

It’s no secret that chemicals in food are becoming increasingly more unhealthy. Not to mention, if you have pets, kids, or are expecting a baby, chemical fertilizers can be downright dangerous. Adding compost to your plants’ soil actually helps reduce the need for these potentially risky chemicals and still delivers healthy (organic) plants.

3. Reduces Daily Waste

According to House Method, you can add more than just discarded food to your compost. You can actually add things around your home that you typically throw in the trash to your compost pile. One example is dryer lint. If the majority of your clothes are made primarily of cotton, you can take the lint and add it to your compost because it’s actually an organic product. This also makes it easier to remember to clean out the lint trap with every load of laundry!

4. Reduces Your Carbon Footprint

Not only does your own garden benefit from composting, but the entire earth does as well. By discarding organic materials into your compost pile, you’re reducing the amount of waste you’re putting into your trash, and therefore the landfill. Over time, these smaller trash loads will add up to big change for the planet

5. Saves You Money

While there’s nothing better than fresh veggies from your own garden, saving money is a very close second. Composting can help you save significantly over the years. You won’t need to invest in pricey soil at the gardening store (because you’ll already have enriched soil thanks to your compost), you’ll have a better crop (so you won’t need to buy as much food at the grocery store), and you may even be able to drop down your trash pickup to every other week or every three weeks, which may help reduce your trash bill!

6. Reduces Greenhouse Gases That Contribute To Climate Change

It’s more important than ever to do what you can to help combat climate change and create a sustainable future for our planet. One way to do this is by composting. As mentioned earlier, composting reduces the amount of trash that goes into the landfill, which also helps reduce methane and nitrous oxide gases generated by landfills, which both contribute to climate change.

The benefits of composting go far beyond your backyard garden. By making this little change, you can contribute to the health of the planet and create a better place to live for future generations. Such a small change can make a big impact.
