How to Plan Your Conservatory Ventilation

Have you ever been in the uncomfortable position of slowly micro-waving in an inadequately vented conservatory?

In the northern hemisphere we tend to have a cooler climate and for this reason, our conservatory team at Alitex design our conservatories for warmth. For most of the year that is a very good idea, but just occasionally we are blessed with a spell of hot weather and that is when vents come into their own – get it right and manage the heat.

Within a vaulted ceiling warm air is trapped – by opening one side of the roof, warm air can escape. With the addition of a lower vent in the conservatory, (or door) cooler air is introduced and creates a circular tumbling effect, the result being an ambient temperature and pleasantly fresh (as opposed to stuffy) air. Low level ventilation is important to making sure any system of this type works effectively. Vents along the eaves have design uses, creating visual cohesion, but on their own they will not cool any conservatory quickly enough without a through draft.

As Nick Bashford, director at Alitex comments “In an unreliable climate, vents can be a very useful element of a conservatory – think about sitting in your conservatory year round and being comfortable in extremes of weather – getting ventilation right is the key”.

Learning over the last sixty plus years through Alitex greenhouse technology, the same principles have been used in our conservatories – not rocket science, but ensuring what we already know is put to good use.
