How to choose a greenhouse frame colour that complements your garden

How to choose a greenhouse frame colour that complements your garden

Choosing the right greenhouse frame colour is about more than visual appeal, it’s about how your structure interacts with the landscape, the planting and even the architecture that surrounds it. The aluminium frame becomes a defining part of your garden’s character, whether it’s tucked amongst beds and borders or standing proudly as a centrepiece.

At Alitex, we offer a carefully curated National Trust standard palette, designed to suit a wide range of styles, seasons and settings. From soft natural greens to striking heritage tones and crisp whites, each shade has been selected for its timeless quality and ability to complement the garden beautifully.

But no two gardens, or gardeners are the same. That’s why we also offer a bespoke greenhouse frame colour service. If our standard palette doesn’t quite match your vision, you’re welcome to choose any RAL colour. Whether it’s to coordinate with an existing structure, echo a beloved feature in the landscape, or simply reflect your personal taste, a custom finish allows you to create something uniquely yours.

Let the garden guide you

The best place to begin when choosing a greenhouse frame colour is with the space around you. In gardens rich with foliage and traditional planting, softer shades such as Wood Sage, Olive Green or Greensand tend to work beautifully. These tones blend gently into the surroundings, allowing our bespoke greenhouses to feel part of the garden from the very beginning.

On the other hand, gardens with clean lines, contemporary landscaping or hardscaping – like slate patios, cladded walls or gravel paths, often lend themselves well to darker, more architectural colours like Graphite Grey, Bronze Manganese or Black. These bolder tones can frame your structure confidently, adding definition and sophistication.

Do not rush! Take your time to make the right greenhouse frame colour choice for you. We provide colour swatches to help you make the decision that’s right for your garden and home, you can even hang them on a makeshift washing line in the final greenhouse location to see what stands out or blends in, depending on what you want to achieve.

People often think they should match the greenhouse frame colour to the window frames of their house. But window frames often make up such a small proportion of the overall house palette that it may not be the best guide. Instead, focus on your desired aesthetic, whether that’s traditional or more contemporary, and consider its location in the garden and the surrounding colour palette.

White and very pale coloured glazing bars can also act as a frame to your view when you’re inside the greenhouse. If you’re creating a calming space to sit and enjoy a view, a colour that blends with what you see through the glass can create a gentler, more cohesive perspective. For instance, if there’s a very green vista beyond, opt for a soft green frame colour to avoid strong contrast.

The powder coating process

All our greenhouse frames are made from aluminium and finished with a high-quality powder coating, applied in-house at our Hampshire factory. This not only gives the structure its colour, but also protects it against the elements for years to come.

We use both vertical and horizontal paint plants, allowing us to coat each component evenly, whether it’s a long profile or a more intricate piece. The aluminium is first cleaned and pre-treated, then coated with a fine powder using electrostatic technology. It’s then cured in an oven, creating a smooth, durable finish that won’t peel, chip or fade.

By keeping the process under one roof, we maintain full control over quality, ensuring your chosen colour looks beautiful and lasts for decades

Your home as a backdrop

Don’t forget the role your home plays in picking a greenhouse frame colour. Your greenhouse doesn’t need to match your property exactly, but it should sit comfortably alongside it. For example, Sussex Emerald or Wood Sage pairs beautifully with red-brick houses, while Chalkhill Blue offers a cool contrast against flint or weathered timber. For modern homes or extensions, Black and Graphite Grey offer a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that works particularly well with steel or glass.
