Walled gardens are an integral and wonderful part of our gardening history. Over the years at Alitex, our aluminium greenhouses have been involved in the creation of many new walled gardens and the restoration of older sites.
Not only are walled gardens a beautiful feature but they also provide a sheltered microclimate, protecting plants from wind and frost, allowing them to thrive even in some colder temperatures. Typically, the walls are constructed from stone and lined with bricks, which helps absorb and retain solar heat to provide the raised temperatures needed to grow specific things such as: peaches, nectarines and grapes.
Often situated as a focal point within a walled garden is a traditional Victorian greenhouse and at Alitex, we have had the pleasure of designing, manufacturing and installing greenhouses in walled gardens large and small.
Walled Garden Restoration
The Thomas Messenger greenhouse is a popular choice for those wishing to create a sympathetic design reminiscent of historic timber glasshouses.
Our Thomas Messenger greenhouse, which was influenced by the Victorian engineer himself, this traditional aluminium structure is powder-coated to eliminate maintenance issues whilst maintaining the Victorian aesthetic. Every project that we undertake, we refer to the original drawings and design of your structure to provide an authentic replication.
You can explore some examples of our favourite glasshouses in restored walled gardens throughout the UK:
- Ballynahinch Castle, Ireland
- Cambo Country House and Estate, Scotland
- Glenbervie Estate, Scotland
- Fulham Palace Gardens, London
- Ramsey Abbey Walled Kitchen Garden, Cambridgeshire
New Walled Gardens
At Alitex we create beautiful glasshouses that are in keeping with any setting. Whether you want a more contemporary design or an authentic Victorian walled garden, your options are more flexible then that of a replication.
The traditional aesthetics of a bespoke greenhouse might guide you however, we recommend viewing as many walled gardens as possible to gain inspiration for the build. You might also wish to include the help of a garden designer to ensure the finished results are in keeping with your vision.
Whilst you plan your visits to some beautiful locations have a look at some previous walled gardens we have worked on in the UK.
