Thomas Messenger Greenhouse
Project Overview
Set within the grounds of a private Grade II* listed residence, this bespoke Alitex glasshouse forms the centrepiece of a newly reimagined walled garden. Positioned at the highest point of the garden, the structure was designed not only to support productive growing but also to act as a striking architectural feature – visible across the landscape and integral to the overall garden design.
A Sensitive Setting
The wider garden has undergone a complete transformation, evolving from what was once a largely undeveloped, muddy plot into a richly structured and inviting space. Designed by Pip Morrison, a highly regarded British landscape architect known for his sensitive approach to historic settings and his richly planted, traditional garden style. His work often combines strong structural elements – such as hedging and defined borders – with abundant, naturalistic planting, creating gardens that feel both timeless and deeply connected to their surroundings.
Within this context, the glasshouse sits comfortably at the heart of a south-facing walled garden, surrounded by lavender and herbaceous planting. It complements the wider design while maintaining a clear visual presence as a focal point.
Design & Layout
The chosen structure is a freestanding Thomas Messenger greenhouse, enhanced by a large, double extended lobby. Measuring approximately 4.2m wide by 12.9m long, the glasshouse is thoughtfully divided into three distinct zones:
- Central Zone – Entertaining & Relaxation
The heart of the space is designed for enjoyment as much as cultivation. Furnished with seating, this area provides a calm, light-filled environment for relaxing, hosting guests, or simply appreciating the garden throughout the seasons. - Outer Wings – Productive Growing
Flanking the central space, the two outer zones are dedicated to growing. These areas allow for flexibility in planting, supporting a range of crops and seasonal displays while maintaining a cohesive overall aesthetic.
The inclusion of a wet heating system ensures year-round usability, creating a stable environment for plants while also making the space comfortable for people, even in cooler months.
Architectural Details
The glasshouse features a classic 45-degree roof pitch, toughened glazing, and carefully considered detailing, including decorative spike finials. Its proportions and traditional styling complement the historic character of the property, while the pale structure colour allows it to sit softly within the garden palette.
The extended lobby not only enhances the sense of arrival but also provides a transitional space between garden and glasshouse – reinforcing its role as both a working and social environment.
A Space for Living
While fully functional as a growing environment, this project places equal emphasis on lifestyle. Mature planting was introduced from the outset, creating an immediate sense of establishment and maturity – so much so that it feels as though the garden and glasshouse have always been there.
The result is a versatile space that extends far beyond horticulture. The glasshouse has already played host to a variety of occasions, from intimate gatherings to charitable events, and even family celebrations. It has become a place to bring people together – an extension of the home in the truest sense.
The Alitex Experience
Throughout the process, close collaboration ensured that the final design met both practical and aesthetic ambitions. Thoughtful guidance and design input helped shape a glasshouse that responds perfectly to its setting, balancing heritage considerations with modern usability.
A Lasting Addition
This project demonstrates how a glasshouse can transcend its traditional role. By combining elegant design, careful positioning and a clear understanding of how the space will be used, the result is a structure that is as much about living as it is about growing – a feature that enhances both garden and home for years to come.
