For all those in gardening design, the place to be last Friday night was at the Landmark Hotel in London where garden designers gathered for the Society of Garden Designer's annual awards ceremony. This is a glittering affair recognising the great work and achievements in the world of garden and landscape creation, and an opportunity to take off those gardening gloves and dust off the dinner suits! Joe Swift MSGD ably hosted the ceremony (and will be the speaker at our Alitex lecture in September). Joe also took home The People's Choice awards for his Greenwood Theatre Garden Project.
Nineteen awards were presented during the evening, recognising excellence in commercial outdoor space, community garden projects, international schemes and design work in private gardens.
A prolific winner of three awards was James Basson MSGD, who scooped the accolades for Planting Design and International Garden, as well as the Grand Award for his Les Canebiers garden design in France. Another multiple winner was Tom Massey, a new face in this arena, who took the award in both student categories for domestic and commercial garden designs.
Once again, Alitex sponsored the John Brookes Lifetime Achievement Award, and have done so since its inception, named after one of the Society's Life Members and granted to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the landscape and gardening design profession. The award, which is gifted by the Council, was given this year to designer, author and teacher Robin Williams FSGD.
The SGD Council said: "As a founder member of the SGD, Robin Williams has sperheaded and actively supported ground-breaking work within the Society of Garden Designers to ensure that landscape design is taught and implemented to the highest possible standard and professionalism. His design work, which exemplifies this classic attention to details, has been most generously and humbly shared with students, mentees and members alike. He communicated these timeless qualities of good designs in his written works and in the many gardens that have stood the test of time and still delight today."
We had a great evening with our guests on the Alitex table and all the worthy winners were suitably recognised and celebrated. Visit the SGD website to see a list of all the winner and images of their design work.
