Working and living so close to the waters of The Solent as we do, it is of no surprise that there are so many sailors or wannabe sailors amongst our workforce.
We also have a couple of quite accomplished sailors and as a result of sailing enthusiasm post-Tall Ship corporate day on The Solent, a new initiative has been formulated by Nick and Tom Hall. Tom has kindly agreed to subsidise an evening class course in Navigation & Seamanship training for staff and friends of staff, which Nick (a past skipper in the Fastnet Race and also a regular skipper in the Round the Islands race) will teach.
For those that are interested in motor boating, sailing, water sports, or you just like being by the sea and fancy learning something new, after successful completion of the course, the internationally recognised and respected RYA course completion certificate for DAY SKIPPER THEORY will be earned. The option to charter a yacht whilst on holiday in Europe and gain the INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE would be possible by completing this course, along with the practical RYA day skipper course. Nick plans to arrange practical learning for those interested in developing their skills beyond the classroom through the warmer months of 2013.
The course is suitable for beginners and people with little experience in yachts and will teach competence in seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Expect to finish the course with an understanding in The basics of seamanship, The essentials of coastal navigation, pilotage and chartwork, Electronic charts & GPS navigation, Position fixing, Plotting a course to steer, Weather forecasting & meteorology, Tides and Collision regulations. Also the practical elements of being on a boat; the construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat, emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, life jackets and life rafts, will be familiarised.
