Tatton Greenhouse to provide escapism from the daily bustle

6 June 2018 | Daisy Faughnan

Our client came across Alitex whilst reading a home interest magazine. Her husband, a classic car collector, decided to sell one of his cars to present the greenhouse as a gift, as he knew how much she had longed for one.

They were particularly taken with the design of the National Trust Tatton greenhouse, as the freestanding structure in Wood Sage would complement their existing Orangery. The heritage style and Victorian features were also in keeping with the planning requirements of their Grade II listed property.

Settled at the end of a stone path in a quintessential and perfectly manicured garden the Tatton provides a real escape for our client. This was one of the key components to the greenhouse as she requested a space for her and the family to unwind and relax away from the day to day bustle. As an area that serves as a dual purpose, our client placed a chair and radio along with her gardening tools against the backdrop of fig and lemon trees. Maximisation of such space was achieved with a combination of benching and strawberry boards allowing the client to grow a multitude of flowers including; sweet peas, sunflowers and dahlias that would eventually be incorporated into the existing beds of the surrounding garden. The diverse seasonable vegetables ranging from French beans and pumpkins to cucumbers and tomatoes will undoubtedly be enjoyed in the kitchen.

Despite the feeling that the arrival of a new baby might reduce her time spent in her greenhouse, our client has made the most of the structure by using her Alitex propagator to nurture these seedlings whilst cherishing moments with her daughter who frequently naps beside her in a pushchair.

It would appear that the decision to exchange a classic car for the tranquillity of this greenhouse has proved a fortuitous one. The client’s investment and time has not only brought them an abundance of plants and produce but a peaceful and calming location for the whole family to enjoy.

“Some of the other greenhouses on the market looked quite flimsy and I chose the Alitex because of its finish and its sturdiness – it looks like a real working greenhouse and gives an impression of strength.”
