The Ickworth Glasshouse at The PIG at Bridge Place

The hotel has been refurbished to enhance the period features along with creating several cosy bars and seating areas. The gardens are situated adjacent to the main hotel, in an area which would have originally been the kitchen garden, accessible via a bridge over a small stream. The original walls survived but everything else within the gardens had become overgrown, an unmanaged woodland which had to be completely cleared before The PIG could start afresh with a blank canvas.

Although there were clear indications of where a greenhouse once stood within the walled garden, it appears to have been removed many decades ago, allowing The PIG to choose the correct Alitex greenhouse for their needs, placing it in a position that best compliments the rest of the garden. The PIG favour the Alitex greenhouses for the low-maintenance properties and traditional design, whilst still maintaining modern features, such as the self-opening vents and smooth roller blinds.

The PIG chose the Ickworth design from our National Trust Collection. It is the main focal point of the kitchen garden, situated at the end of the long central pathway, and next to the outdoor dining space, The Garden Oven. For the first time at a PIG, you have to actually walk through the greenhouse to get to The Garden Oven terrace. Guests can sit and enjoy their wood fired flat breads surrounded by the kitchen garden and greenhouse, it is a really immersive experience!
