The 10th September sees our annual lecture and this year we are excited to welcome Garden Designer, Writer and Broadcaster Matthew Wilson to Torberry Farm to speak of his time as curator at RHS Hyde Hall and Harlow Carr; but what else has Matthew been up to in his influential career?
As well as being a regular correspondent for the Financial Times and since 2009, a regular panellist on Radio 4’s Gardeners Question Time, Matthew is also the Managing Director and Principle Designer for London’s oldest horticultural business, Clifton Nurseries. Based in Little Venice and established in 1851, Clifton has worked on projects all over the globe, with current work taking place in Riyadh, Athens, Toulous and North Yorkshire!
He has also presented and featured in a number of television programmes including the award winning ’Landscape Man’ for Channel 4. Matthew has also written and contributed to a number of books on gardening and horticulture including ‘Making a Garden’ the book which accompanied his television series, and the Garden Media Guild award winning ‘New Gardening – How to Garden in a Changing Climate’.
His areas of interest include environmentally sensitive gardening, wildlife and landscapes, which was put to the test at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show where Matthew designed his first ever Chelsea show garden. Sponsored by Royal Bank of Canada, his garden reflected his commitment to conserving water and showed his breadth of knowledge on sustainable garden design along with his experience in creating urban gardens.
The topic for this year’s annual lecture is “A tale of two gardens: and how they shaped my future.” Matthew will be speaking about his time as curator at both RHS Hyde Hall and RHS Harlow Carr. At Hyde Hall, Matthew extended the 20 acres of cultivated garden as well as a further 75 acres of woodland planting; at Harlow Carr, he established their winter walk and stunning main borders, both fantastic accomplishments that we cannot wait to hear about.
