Visit our Hidcote greenhouse at Hidcote Gardens

Hidcote Manor Garden is one of England’s great gardens, and was the lifelong passion of one man – self taught gardener Lawrence Johnston who created a ‘garden of rooms.’ It was actually the first National Trust property acquired specifically for the garden and is well worth a visit. When you are there, take a moment to browse in the Plant Centre - regarded as the flagship of the Trust. We were delighted to be asked earlier this year to put up the Hidcote National Trust Greenhouse within the plant centre at its namesake garden.

The desire for a greenhouse at the plant centre was 2-fold; to create a real impact as you enter, and to improve the visitor experience of Hidcote Gardens.

When it was first planned, Hidcote was designed as a private garden, so you will notice that there are no plant labels in evidence. This can be a frustration if you find a species you are keen to grow, and Jane Ewers, the Plant Centre Manager was keen to overcome this problem. In the greenhouse you will find 20 – 30 of the species that are looking great around the garden at that time, taken as cuttings and presented in a vase – and clearly labelled. Also, as the centre is manned by an educated and informed team, you should be able to get the answers to all your botanical questions.

You will also find a good collection of scented plants to hit the senses as you enter, alongside some exotics and tender bulbs.

The greenhouse is set amongst the plant display benches laden with seasonal plants, and a mass of Witchford Pottery, crammed with acers, grasses and a variety of annuals.

Jane is very proud of her Plant Centre, and it shows. It is considered to be the Flagship Plant Centre in the Trust, and is well worth a visit.

National Trust Greenhouse Hidcote

“The National Trust greenhouse is modelled on historic structures, but being made of easy to maintain materials, it’s a great combination of period style and modern technology.”
