Greening Alitex

At Alitex we are very privileged to have our greenhouses and conservatories sited in some of the most stunning gardens in the world.  We strive to ensure that these perfect settings stay just that - by ensuring our activities are as sympathetic to the needs of the environment as to the beautiful surroundings in which they are built.

Torberry Farm is located in the proposed South Downs National Park in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Wildlife abounds the site throughout the seasons.  Winter time witnesses flocks of fieldfares in the surrounding fields whilst buzzards and Red Kite are most noticeable in the spring.   Summer is the perfect time for early evening bats to swoop along the river’s edge; a kingfisher has been sighted here too.  Infact, here at Torberry we are so passionate about the natural beauty of our surroundings that we named some of our National Trust greenhouse colours after the butterflies and moths to be found here – Sussex Emerald; Chalkhill Blue and Adonis Blue, to name a few.

An Environmental Management System is currently under development to ensure that our modern methods used to craft and erect the structures are sensitive to the needs of the local area – including the local community.  Over the coming weeks and months we will reduce, reuse and recycle our office and production waste; reduce water usage; swap any chemicals for less harmful ones where ever possible and reduce the amount of energy (including transportation fuel) we use.

According to the Carbon Trust (with whom we have been working) Alitex is the first producer of Aluminium greenhouses to have undergone an assessment of energy use.  The Carbon Trust has produced a Carbon Footprint of 8 tonnes per employee per year for us. As a result, we are now determined to ‘lose a few toes’!

Ensuring our greenhouses leave the smallest of footprints doesn’t stop at Torberry however.  Aluminium has to be sourced, either from recyclate or mined; glass produced in a factory elsewhere, whilst paints are developed from a range of ingredients.  So by undertaking a ‘life cycle analysis’ of our greenhouses we can not only ensure we are using the best material for your structure  whilst having the least impact on the environment, but we will also be able to influence all our suppliers to do the same.

If you would like further details regarding the greening of Alitex, please do call – or arrange a visit to Torberry Farm.
